Choose your own tarot adventure: Celtic Cross spread edition
Six variations on the Celtic Cross, and an opportunity to get more familiar with this classic spread
Hi little coven.
The Celtic Cross was one of the earliest spreads I learned as a tarot newbie, after “past, present, future”. As one of the most enduring classic tarot spreads, it’s the tarotist’s version of a DJ playing Can’t Help Falling in Love With You at a wedding — a true classic that every pro keeps in rotation.
But because the spread has been around for so long, and used across many different tarot traditions, many variations on it, with changes made on everything from the from the language for the prompts to the number of cards pulled to the order of laying out the cards and more.
Unsurprisingly, I welcome any and all creative adaptations on the standard Celtic Cross, and have been known, in 1:1 sessions, to adapt the spread on the fly based on what my querent needs to know in the moment.
Below you’ll find six of my personal favorite variations on the Celtic Cross (five of which I shared on Instagram, plus one bonus version designed to help you outline an essay that’s exclusive for YOU!), I hope you’re inspired by playing with them!
And if you want to practice getting more familiar with this ten-card spread, and gain confidence to developing your very own personalised version of it, why not subscribe to The Shuffle now so that you join me this weekend for a special “Creative Cross” edition of my weekly tarot journaling club?
This is amazing! I will be trying the creativity one for sure.
I just wrote about my adaptation and leveled it up using a double deck method. If you are interested:

Thanks very much for opening up the possibilities of the Celtic Cross in these ways... Brilliant!!! As a relative newcomer to Substack, I am definitely going to look at the 'craft an essay' spread first 🧐
